Sometimes magic can have deadly consequences.

Merrick has a job. A girlfriend. A life. But when his father dies, he learns that his past is a lie and that he belongs to an ancient species whose members are able to command the elemental forces of nature. Lost in his new reality where even trees and rocks are sentient, he’s given sanctuary by an old man and his daughter who have been cast out by their own kind for mixing technology with magic and for teaching magic to their human employees.

Merrick learns as much as he can from them, but he’s soon forced to leave on an epic, action-filled adventure to discover his creation name—the key to fully unlocking his magical potential.

But he's not the only one interested in his name and the power it holds. His sociopathic brother wants it too, and he'll do whatever it takes to steal Merrick's magic and fulfill a deadly prophecy that will destroy the human world and keep magic from them forever.

To stop his brother and the prophecy, Merrick must survive his training, struggle against betrayal and treachery, and discover his true nature before it’s too late—for everyone.

The Conservation of Magic The Science of Magic Book 1 eBook Michael W Layne

A unique fantasy intertwined with the existing world. Some elements were a bit too farfetched-the physical transformation of the protagonist for one, but skipping over those bits-the story was entertaining, lively and enjoyable. The character development was rich enough without being too in depth. The battle scenes were sketchy, but that somehow was fine for the story-it didn't feel like it needed the in-the-trenches blow-by-blow fighting descriptions.

The Conservation of Magic The Science of Magic Book 1 eBook Michael W Layne Reviews

The imagery brought to mind by this author is classic. The primary characters are almost warm enough to be breathing on the page. A very enjoyable read.
Loved this book! A different take on magic and it works. Will be following with the rest of his books!
A great modern Fantasy series. Bought for my tween in paperback, because we both wanted to read, and I don't share my kindle. The cover itself is a work of art. Will look great in our library. More in-depth review later...
Delightful read. Nice combination of modern world and fantasy/myth/creationism. Bit to much drilled down detail for my taste, seemed to drag down the storyline. All in all, a nice evening diversion after a long day.
What does it mean to "conserve" magic? I didn't have a clue when I started reading. I do now. There were things that I liked about the book and things I did not like. The concept was interesting, but the relationships between the many characters was confusing. I think I would have enjoyed the book more if it had been several books, each with its own conclusion, rather than so much back and forth.
I thoroughly enjoyed this book. It transported me beyond our naturally perceived reality to a wonderfully mind expanding place where all ambitions, fears, self doubts and deceptions do battle with truth, trust, emotions, self exploration and wishes. All artfully melded together with human frailties and faults in an entertaining, well formed book that kept me looking forward to the next chapter. I look forward to more from Michael Layne. His love of what he does is blazingly apparent in the quality of his book.
I found "The Conservation of Magic" to be an entertaining read--and it has a proper ending! Thank you very much, Michael. The mix of ancient folklore and fantasy with modern day science I felt was done quite well. One could even add a bit of spirituality in there with the sentient trees, rocks, dirt, water, etc. (everything, basically). Our hero, Merrick, is one of those people who doesn't feel he really fits in anywhere. Most people like that either become bitter and angry or feel they are insubstantial or even wimpy (as one reviewer said). Merrick is the latter, probably even more so after learning he had been lied to all his life about who his real parents were.

Then one night, out walking with his 'too good to what to be with me' girlfriend, they get mugged in an alley and Merrick uses power he did not know he had. It kills one of the muggers and almost kills his girlfriend as well. From this he starts to piece together his background and learns a bit why he doesn't feel like he fits in anywhere.

The rest of the story is Merrick learning and growing into who he truly is. But getting past the 'wimpy' side takes a lot of time when you've been that way most of your life. Fortunately, the story is written very well so following Merrick on his journey is interesting and even enjoyable and makes you want to keep reading more. Good story telling, Michael. I've already told a few others they would love this book.
